One of the most important things for you to take with you from my class is a mastery of writing mechanics. I am committed to your mastery of every grammar and punctuation rule. The thing is — I know you know the rules, at least many of the rules. Your hard copy assignments show a fair to excellent mastery of grammar, spelling and punctuation. However, many students’ blog posts are in need of a writing mechanic! Is it the informal medium that lends itself to casual punctuation? Perhaps it is the added difficulty of not proofing a hard copy? Although you should keep the casual tone of your blogs, you should avoid using casual punctuation. You will want to get in the habit of carefully proofing everything, from blog posts to e-mails — it all counts in the professional world, especially when you are a paid writer.
Using correct spelling, grammar and punctuation on your blog shows readers your attention to detail, and it gives you credibility. Remember, you are not only writing your blog for readers, but you are also writing it for potential employers. You should proof your blog posts as carefully as you proof your hard-copy assignments.
If you are wondering if your blog needs a writing tune-up, feel free to print a copy of some of your posts and set up a time to meet with me. I am happy to give you feedback. You are also welcome to partner with a study buddy and proof each other’s posts.
If there are other ways I can help, please let me know. I invite you to get the most from your education.
